When I came to Christian Science I was a sick, unhappy woman, reaching out to anything that gave a ray of hope. Finally, hearing that a lady lived near our town who healed the sick without medicine, I decided to go to see her, as I had given medicine a fair trial and was nothing bettered. It was about two months before I did so, and during that time we made inquiries about this mode of healing; but no one seemed to know much about it, although a friend told us that his wife had been greatly benefited, and if I would take treatment I would never regret it.
Thus encouraged, I went to see the lady, and am thankful that I did. When I related to her my tale of woe, she remarked that it was not pleasant to be sick, and said that she would come to see me the next day. There was nothing said about a treatment and I had never heard of absent treatment. She did not ask me a question about my ills, and as we walked back to the car I thought that she did not seem to care what might happen to me before the next day. The ear was about filled with passengers, and a little incident happened that amused me very much. I laughed heartily, and as it had been some time since I had felt like laughing, the thought came that I surely was not so sick as I had allowed myself to believe.
Next day, when the lady came and asked me questions about the Bible and if I believed in Christ Jesus, I was very much disappointed, for I wanted to get well; I did not want a religion, having very little faith in what people call religion. Soon, however, I began to feel better, and kept on improving, so that it was not long before I felt that perhaps life was worth living. I was happy, regardless of the opposition which came from relatives and friends. The second time the lady called she brought the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and that was the first time I had ever heard the words Christian Science.
