REST

From the December 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It would be hard to find words which have brought greater consolation to the human race than these: "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Even when people have not fully apprehended their meaning, they have still conveyed a hope which has tended to support them amid the discomforts and sorrows of life. It is also the case that their meaning has been sadly distorted, until their metaphysical significance has frequently been well nigh lost.

In uttering these comforting words the Master did not imply that his personality was the lodestar; rather was it his teaching to which he referred, to his revelation of God as Truth and Love, as Spirit, and to the intimate relationship between God and man which his practice demonstrated beyond cavil. It is too true that the Christian world has times without number missed the mark by substituting the personality of Jesus for the divine Principle which he showed forth in his life in healing the sick and the sinning. It was the Christ, Truth, that destroyed eror, whatever its form, at every turn of the Master's ministry.

It is, then, upon true concepts of God, His real spiritual universe, and man as existing in the divine consciousness, that rest is to be found. "Every pang that rends the heart," every pulse with the throb of pain, every fear that robs humanity of active participation in the joy of living and the happiness of gracious service, has its origin in the errors of material sense. By declaring the allness of God, Mrs. Eddy has lifted the veil from Jesus' teachings, so that we are enabled to understand them and to enter into the rest of the people of God. On page 492 of Science and Health we read, "God is Mind, and God is infinite; hence all is Mind." Thus our Leader states the truth which will ultimately redeem the race along every line of endeavor. At the same time she maintained that God is good, and in Christian Science it is firmly held that this infinitely good Mind is all that has any real existence or power. Thus reasoning, matter, material sense, evil of every kind, are seen to be unrealities, without presence and without power.
