During an epidemic of scarlet fever I manifested all the symptoms of the disease, and as Christian Scientists are taught to obey the laws, the board of health was notified and I went into quarantine. As we obeyed all the rules, I was confined to one room for several weeks, but no material remedies were used. A practitioner was engaged and I relied absolutely upon Christian Science. A friend who was taken with the disease about the same time, and who had medical treatment and a trained nurse in attendance, was in quarantine several weeks longer than I was. For two weeks she was kept in a dark room and for many weeks could not read at all. At the end of her quarantine she was obliged to consult an optician, who said that the eyes were in such a weakened condition that she would have to wear glasses and leave college for the rest of the year.
I however suffered intense pain in the eyes one night only; by morning it had disappeared. My room was not darkened during all my illness. I read the Bible, also Science and Health, every day, sometimes nearly all day, knowing that I must rise spiritually over this false material sense. The different complications that accompany this disease were quickly destroyed by Christian Science treatment. There was none of the disagreeableness of peeling experienced, except on the forehead, hands, and feet. I had to say that the hands and feet had peeled before the quarantine could be lifted. There were no bad after effects as regards the eyes or ears; in fact I came out normal in every way.
I was indeed very grateful for this healing, but even more for the spiritual uplift that came at this time, for I learned to know God as all-power and the only power. The healing has been permanent, and my health is now perfect. I have continued to study and learn more of Christian Science.— Syracuse, N. Y.
