THE BIBLE AND THE SUNDAY SCHOOL

From the December 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Bible may be called the textbook of Christianity. In it is revealed the way of life, the truth that solves every problem, enabling men to overcome all evil and to rise above the limitations of material sense. The Sunday school is the school for Bible study, where even to the younger children the great truths of Scripture can be made simple and clear; and nothing in the world is so important to understand.

The Bible contains first the true explanation of the creation of man and the universe. It teaches that these express the thought of God, and that man, the complete expression of divine Mind, is created in God's image and likeness. After the first chapter of Genesis comes a history of the creation of the world and man expressed in the terms of false material sense.

The Old Testament is the history of a race of people through whom the Christ idea came to the world. The first of this race was Abraham. "This patriarch," Mrs. Eddy says, "illustrated the purpose of Love to create trust in good, and showed the life preserving power of spiritual understanding" (Science and Health, p. 579). The growth of trust in good and of spiritual understanding in the Hebrew nation is a story of supreme interest to mankind. If we have the "key" and know what it is all about, it is a constant revelation of Truth that heals sickness and redeems life from the power of sin.
