I have often been encouraged by reading the testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals, and I sincerely hope that my testimony may encourage those who read it. Until a few years ago I cared nothing for religion. I was brought up in a church to which all of my people were devoted, but with which I was never satisfied. I went there simply as a duty, and would sometimes stay away for months at a time. I had ceased to pray, except for guidance and forgiveness, as my prayers were never answered; and I felt that I must surely have asked amiss.
A short time after coming to this city, we moved next door to a family of Christian Scientists; and in a few days I began to notice that they were different from most people. They lived their religion in their home, and all of the time. We accepted an invitation from a member of that family to attend a Wednesday evening service, and went out of curiosity. I was very much impressed, however, and a short time afterward I attended a Sunday morning service. I did not seem to understand what was read, but I somehow enjoyed being there.
In June, 1910, I had what we considered at the time a very simple operation on my right foot. A fewdays later, however, a condition of poisoning developed, which was so serious to mortal sense that the physician in charge feared amputation of the foot would be necessary; and while enduring the most terrible suffering I had ever experienced in my life, I realized that I must seek a power above the human. Acting upon the recommendation of our neighbor, my husband called a Christian Science practitioner, and through her faithful work I soon experienced relief, and my foot slowly but surely healed. I believe that I am walking on two feet instead of one today as the result of Christian Science treatment. For eight years I had also worn glasses for reading and all close work. Since my first treatment in Christian Science I have not needed glasses, and my eyesight is perfect.
