Testimonies of Healing

[Translated from the German]

Although the Scriptures have always...

From the August 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although the Scriptures have always held for me a place apart from other books, and although I was taught to look upon the Bible as the book of life, this neither enabled me to find the living truth therein contained, nor were the means afforded to make it the "chart of life," as we read in Science and Health (p. 24). It took the sure guidance of our Leader to make this possible,—to point out, as she goes on to say, "the buoys and healing currents of Truth" through the spiritual interpretation of the Bible, whereby she furnished the indisputable proof that its teachings are applicable today as of old, and that we may rely at all times on the truth which leads us to the realization of the meaning of the Master's words, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Fourteen years ago Christian Science was first brought to my attention, at a time when it seemed that there was no deliverance from a condition of utmost discouragement and hopelessness, occasioned by a nervous breakdown. This was the third such attack, also by far the most serious one, and all material remedies of which I knew proved ineffective. Without the slightest understanding of the high import of Christian Science, and only as a last resort, I turned to it, following the proposal of a friend who had herself no concept of this religion, though she had heard a good deal about the healing effected by it. With a few treatments my health improved perceptibly, and although the healing went on slowly, I never again struggled with discouragement and impatience. Gradually it became possible for me to take up my work as a teacher, from which I had been kept for five years. As time went on, I became aware, to my great joy, that I had attained a degree of endurance such as I had never known before, as I was able to carry through the required program every day without experiencing the slightest fatigue, and I had the certainty that I was healed.

This experience sufficed as a proof that it is Truth which makes us free, and it has taught me constantly during the last fourteen years to trust infinite Truth at all times and under all circumstances. By so doing I have never failed to receive the help for which we praise God today, as did the people in Jesus' time,—not only in words, but by helping ourselves as well as others through the power of God.—
