I owe everything I am and expect to be to Christian Science. Several years ago I was taken ill with nervous exhaustion, turned against all my friends, and wanted only to die. I was so unhappy and miserable that I was a constant worry to my parents. A lady who was visiting in the town recommended Christian Science. She said to me, "I am not a Christian Scientist, but I know several people who are, and they all seem so happy and cheerful." I immediately went to see a lady who was a Scientist, and she kindly loaned me a copy of Science and Health. My mother said that evening, after reading the chapter on Prayer, that she knew Christian Science was true, and that she could not understand how any one could say aught against this religion, for this chapter proved that it was the teaching of the Bible. My father was at that time in a hospital out of town, and while there a friend who visited him related his healing in Christian Science and gave him a copy of Science and Health. When my father came home, he and my mother took up the study of Christian Science in earnest, but I did not, for while I believed it was true and could heal others, strangely enough I did not believe it could heal me. In February, however, my condition became so serious that a practitioner was called, and through her loving help I was healed.
A medical nurse was rooming at our home during the worst of my illness, and she made the remark to my mother that if Christian Science healed me, she would know there was something in it. My healing was slow, but it has helped me to be more patient. Stomach trouble, headaches, worry, envy, hatred, and selfishness have been overcome to a great extent, and I am happier than I have ever been in my life. I know that "the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death;" and I have proven that "to those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," as we read in the Preface to Science and Health (p. vii). The "scientific statement of being" (p. 468) and the one hundred and twenty-fourth psalm have been of untold benefit to me. I have also found the Concordance to Science and Health indispensable to its study.
My healing has been permanent; in fact, my health is better than ever before. I am a member of the Christian Science Society here, also a teacher in the Sunday school, and pianist for both church and Sunday school. I have done this work for the past three years, and my power of endurance is increasing each day. I have been able in the last year and a half to do physical work that others could not do, enduring long and unbroken hours without the slightest sense of fatigue.
