CHRISTIAN SCIENCE was introduced in Guernsey early in 1904, to meet a deep need and the spiritual hunger of a small group of people. Up to that time nothing had been known of this new-old teaching, but as the truth dawned, it was felt that something had come that was destined to stay and to revolutionize thought. The babes in truth seemed helpless, but in Love's own way assistance came, and English Scientists vied with one another in giving out what they knew would best contribute to our growth.
As a result the regular reading of the Lesson-Sermons was started in a private house two miles from the town of St. Peter Port. Attempts to harmonize the old with the new led to some inevitable friction, and resulted in one family making the final severance and becoming members of The Mother Church. A society was formed in 1905, and arrangements were made to give a lecture, so that the extraordinary criticisms and misconceptions that were being promulgated might be authoritatively dealt with. The lecture was given to a crowded audience and it helped on the work considerably. Since then a lecture has been given each year to thoughtful audiences.
In 1906 a church was formed under the old rule, and there began years of a steady upward progress. A move was made to another private house in the town, and then in 1908 the present place of meeting at 10 Mount row was taken. This place is situated just on the outskirts of the town, on one of the principal roads, and up to the present has met all requirements. From the first it appeared to be the work of the church to interest people in Science, and afterward have the joy of seeing them take up the work in English or Colonial churches.
