IN December, 1897, two students of Christian Science instituted services at the home of one of them, and this small commencement inaugurated the dawn of Christian Science in Palo Alto. Services were continued at this home for over two years, but in May, 1900, an organization was consummated and the services were held in a public hall. Notice of the services was then advertised in The Christian Science Journal.
In the fall of 1904 the church was incorporated. At this period (or shortly thereafter) the room in use became inadequate for the increased attendance, and one twice its size was made available by removing a partition. Here services were held for three succeeding years, until the growth—together with the expiration of the lease—made it necessary to seek a more commodious home. This was obtained in August, 1908, when a lease was signed for the occupancy of the edifice formerly used by the Presbyterian church, located at the corner of Waverly and University Avenues, a central and convenient point for all.
From 1899 to 1907 the hall in which the services were held was utilized for the reading-room. It was then deemed advisable to move the equipment to a room that could be used exclusively for the purposes of a reading-room. Accordingly one was found on University Avenue, and this was occupied until the removal to the above mentioned church building, where there was a spacious room well adapted for the needs.
