IT cannot be denied that until the spiritual sense is awakened God seems very far off and heaven a place to be reached only after death. While it is true that advanced thinkers would probably disclaim such concepts, we need only question ourselves in order to find how they cling to us even after we have had assurance of better things. The greatest benefactor of humanity is for this reason the one who brings God and heaven nearer to men, and he who does this deserves the love and gratitude of all mankind.
Among the names prominent in sacred history is that of Moses, to whom, the psalmist tells us, God "made known his ways." Moses had been reared in a material and sensual religion which took little account of human rights, and from this his spiritual sense revolted even before he knew God well enough to declare His law. His first crude attempt at relieving the oppressed meant the killing of an Egyptian, and this was followed by forty years of exile in the deserts; but at length he was able to hear the voice of God, and in time to give out the code which the Jews and all Christian nations claim to honor. Too much cannot be said in praise of this ancient lawgiver who, as Mrs. Eddy points out (Science and Health, p. 200), "advanced a nation to the worship of God in Spirit instead of matter, and illustrated the grand human capacities of being bestowed by immortal Mind." Well might his own race, all races indeed, honor him of whom a poet has written that
... never earth's philosopher
Traced with his golden pen,
On the deathless page, truths half so sage
As he wrote down for men.
