Testimonies of Healing

It is with a deep sense of gratitude...

From the April 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I send the particulars of my coming into Christian Science. In early youth I was thrown largely upon my own resources, and often in working out the vexed problems that presented themselves I found it most helpful to turn to the Bible for guidance. Many times I found help, though sometimes the meaning was obscure and I remained as puzzled and perplexed as before. It was at this time that I united with an orthodox church. For several years I attended services regularly, but finally these teachings no longer satisfied me. I had a sincere desire to know more of God, and my greatest wish was to have that Mind in me "which was also in Christ Jesus."

In 1903, while I was living in Chicago, a friend told me she was going to make a visit in Maine, and invited me to go with her as her guest. She later added that she planned to attend the Christian Science communion services in Boston, but that need not interfere with my pleasures. The train we took from Chicago was a special for the Scientists. Though I knew nothing of their teachings, I was thankful to be in this throng of happy people, for such a manifestation of love I had never seen before. Many were busy studying their textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and I was anxious to know what it contained, for they all seemed to enjoy reading it.

Sunday morning found me at The Mother Church in Boston. At the close of the communion service the invitation was given us to visit Mrs. Eddy's home at Pleasant View, Concord, N. H. I was as eager for the visit as any of the Scientists, and all whom I had met were desirous that I should go with them. On the way to Concord I was introduced to a gentleman who I afterward learned was a Christian Science lecturer. Knowing this to be my first experience in Science, he told me of a man being cured of the liquor habit through Christian Science treatment. To me it was wonderful news that sin could be destroyed in this way, and that I could learn how it was brought about through study of this subject.
