PROGRESS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the August 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In September, 1895, a resident of this city was healed by Christian Science of a serious illness. Afterward, hearing of another who was interested, these two united in the study of Science and Health. About five years later a visiting Christian Scientist introduced the subject of Christian Science to another family in Halifax, and again the healing power of Truth was demonstrated.

Learning of one another's interest, these two groups met, with the result that on Sunday, Aug. 5, 1900, nine or ten people gathered at the home of one of this number and had a Christian Science service, reading the Lesson-Sermon and even taking up an offering. Then the desire came to spread the glad tidings of Christian Science to others, and a suitable place to locate was looked for. Rooms were secured in the Aberdeen Building, at the corner of Barrington and Buckingham Streets, and public services were begun. A Christian Science organization was formed, and the work of giving out the truth in Halifax was established on an orderly basis.

In starting Christian Science services in this city, the workers were much indebted to the unbounded enthusiasm and practical help rendered by the friend already mentioned as being instrumental in introducing Christian Science into the family of one of the members. Thus encouraged, they were able, with the assistance of some other visiting Christian Scientists, to furnish the rooms. They were also fortunate in having among their number one who was an experienced practitioner, and who became the first reader.
