Testimonies of Healing

When I began the study of Christian Science...

From the August 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I began the study of Christian Science I wanted to find out what it was that made its followers so harmonious, not only with one another but with every phase of good. One verse in the Bible stood out clearer and plainer to me than any other, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Then in Science and Health (p. 242) I read: "There is but one way to heaven, harmony, and Christ in divine Science shows us this way. It is to know no other reality—to have no other consciousness of life— than good, God and His reflection, and to rise superior to the so-called pain and pleasure of the senses." In the light of our Leader's explanation the meaning of the Bible text seemed very clear; I did not have to go into all the by-ways trying to find "heaven, harmony," that I might be freed from sin and sickness, but the "one way" was to learn to know God, to do His will, and as I let go of self, my will, and reached out to know the divine Mind, I realized only good would be mine.

During the past two years I have been freed from several physical ailments, and I am indeed grateful to God for the healing; but what to me means far more than the release from sickness is the spiritual uplift. Surely to know God is to find the kingdom we are all seeking, and in proportion as we seek Him we shall find Him, and in just that proportion be freed of all that is unlike God, good. It is with a thankful heart that I send this testimony. In the words of the psalmist I say, "I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will show forth all thy marvelous works."—
