DISTRIBUTION OF LITERATURE

From the November 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For a number of years the free distribution of Christian Science literature has been assuming increasingly larger proportions in the activity of the entire field. The desire of Christian Scientists to avoid neglecting this important work, together with the necessity for developing step by step the organized means for accomplishing the best results, has sometimes produced a lack of uniformity in methods and a liability in some instances to conflict in authority.

After careful consideration of the subject by The Christian Science Board of Directors and by the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy, it has seemed clear that the field should demonstrate greater uniformity in this work.

The By–laws of The Mother Church show clearly that the branch societies are organizations independent of each other through which Christian Scientists express to the world a large part of the activity of the Christian Science movement. It is considered advisable to avoid even a slight deviation from the plan of orderly and systematic classification of the duties of churches and individual workers which Mrs. Eddy's demonstration has provided. Therefore The Christian Science Board of Directors recommends that the responsibility for the free distribution of authorized Christian Science literature, outside of the Boston district, should not be separated from the work of the branch churches and societies, and that this important activity should be carried on through their literature distribution committees. Committees on Publication would then be left free to attend to their work as specifically provided in Article XXXIII and Article I, Section 6, of the By–laws of The Mother Church.
