Testimonies of Healing

With the hope of helping some...

From the December 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With the hope of helping some fellow man to an understanding of the truth that heals and purifies, I wish to relate what Christian Science has done and is doing for me. The truism, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity," was proven in my case, for it seemed I had to hit bottom before I could rise.

This hard experience was the result of my leaving home at a very early age and going out into the world. After many years of participation in its so-called pleasures I found myself sick, miserable, and as I thought ready to die. I was suffering from what physicians diagnosed as a severe form of catarrh. The entire system was affected, to the extent that I could not eat solid foods without having hours of pain afterward, sleepless nights, and nervousness accompanied by inaction of the bowels amounting almost to paralysis, besides continuous severe headache. Following the advice of doctors, I tried different climates, took drugs, and carried out their instructions, even submitting to an operation, but found myself growing steadily worse. I therefore decided to let things drift, as I could not hope for relief from any source I had knowledge of; but through what I now realize was divine guidance, I was led to Christian Science.

In May, 1913, I went to a practitioner and was given treatment. She told me of the allness and loving-kindness of God, and I was so encouraged that with the expectation of being healed I diligently applied myself to a systematic study of Christian Science. This earnest seeking brought to me not only healing bit a higher standard of living and thinking, a more kindly attitude toward all mankind, together with a desire to enlist as a soldier in the cause. I have become a better man in every way. Where before I had no God, no religion, no hope, no health, now I am glad that cooperating with God, good, I can be of some help in the betterment of all humanity. Experience taught me that I could do nothing of myself. Christian Science is teaching me to let God govern and to be grateful.—
