OPPORTUNITY AND RESPONSIBILITY

From the December 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Jesus was questioned by Pilate as to the purpose of his mission, he replied, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth." He repeatedly affirmed that he came to do the will of the Father. The human was ever in subjection to the divine. He taught his followers to pray, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." He demonstrated that for men to be resigned to the will of God is to gain freedom and harmony beyond all human understanding.

It was necessary for the Master to be faithful in all that was required of him, even as it is for those who are possessed of little understanding. He said to his disciples, "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work." There can be an abiding sense of joy and satisfaction only when men are faithful in the performance of every work to which they are called. Any disobedience to the call, any failure to meet the divine requirements, robs one of the loving benediction, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Present opportunity must be improved if one would reap the reward of the faithful. There is on the part of some a manifest inclination to ignore the present and look to what are believed to be the more important things of the future. Doubtless most persons have at some time dreamed of doing a work which would be considered of more than ordinary importance, but how few are willing to devote themselves faithfully and intelligently to the necessary things of to-day, taking no anxious thought for the morrow. Only those who improve the present will be prepared to take advantage of future opportunities.
