Testimonies of Healing

From the February 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I have had so many proofs of the help derived through even a small understanding of Christian Science that I must no longer refrain from sending my testimony. One of my greatest demonstrations occurred one New Year's eve. I was staying at a girl's hostel, and as one of the oldest boarders I felt I must be particularly careful in observing rules, one of which was that all girls should be in by half past ten in the evening.

On the day mentioned my work had detained me very late, and instead of holding to the truth I allowed worry and vexation to rule me, with the result that I lost one tram-car and so missed the connection at the junction and had to wait many minutes. Even after I was seated in a car to go in the right direction there was further delay, and when I saw an inward bound car coming up, which I at once knew would go through first, without a second's thought I dashed out, right in front of an outward bound car, forgetting the center line of rails at this junction. I was struck by the front of the car and fell across the rails, receiving from the life-guard three severe blows across the lower part of the back. With the third blow the thought of death came; but this was instantly denied and the allness of God declared. Immediately all sensation left my body, and although I was conscious of being pushed along the road, of the grinding of wheels and brakes, the thudding of feet beside the car, yet there was no pain.

When lifted up I was able to tell the men who had come to my assistance that I was not hurt, but it was difficult to make them believe this; they seemed to think one of my legs must be injured. It was not, however, but my body was very much bruised, only my head, hands, and feet having escaped. On one leg was a bruise the swelling of which took three days to go down and the discoloration three weeks to disappear; but neither then nor at any other time did it give me any trouble.
