After about four years and a half of study of and interest in Christian Science, I am persuaded that a brief story of a part of the comforts, healings, and blessings that have come to me and to the members of my family through the application of its teachings will encourage other persons in need of relief and comfort.
I had from childhood carried the burdens of malaria, typhoid, and the complex miseries of chills, ague, fevers, sick stomach, headaches, and general poor health, resulting later in weak and defective eyesight, and finally, at the age of forty-three years, in an almost complete breakdown in the form of extreme neuralgia sometimes approaching meningitis. Through all these years I had fed my system with drugs and medicines and indulged my mind with an ever increasing belief in the reality of my suffering. At the age of thirty-four I came with my wife to California from Illinois hoping to find health, fortune, and happiness. For ten years I sought these in vain. I found only poorer health, disaster, and discontent. I moved about over the state, filled with sickness, fear, and discouragement. My only noticeable accumulation was a laboratory of medicines which I cared for and packed and moved about with me with all the care of my most personal belongings. After pursuing this phantom of health in materia medica and peace of mind in money through these weary years, I fled to the mountains of northern California for my health and for rest that I seemed destined never to possess; for I found neither, —instead, only poorer health and added financial disaster.
In September, 1913, I had a forcible view of my nearness to the end of material things. There were no more glittering drug stores, no physicians of national or international reputation to consult, no means to pay for additional experiments by doctors and oculists; and in this extremity I turned to Christian Science, turned as a lost child turns to its parents. I asked no questions, found no fault, made no comparisons. I accepted all I could understand and patiently waited for more light. I had worn spectacles for fifteen years. My wife was afflicted with the most aggravated types of headache, neuralgia, stomach disorder, and defective eyesight. We had three rather frail boys. My wife joined me in the study of Christian Science, we put our three boys into the Sunday school, and relief came quickly in measures that I can never tell. I discarded spectacles, headaches seldom returned and then but lightly, I scarcely had any stomach disorder at all. I grew stronger, and finally became a well man, normal in health. In every time of need my remedy is Christian Science treatment. The result has been equally as satisfactory to my wife. She, too, is now healed of those dread headaches, and attacks of illness are overcome by the power of Truth. Our children grew stronger and their health is nothing less than (wonderful.
