Liberty has never been established by a false peace. It takes the righteous facts of truth to satisfy the high ideals of liberty. On page 128 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Truth crushed to earth springs spontaneously upward, and whispers to the breeze man's inalienable birthright—Liberty." History shows the sad results of allowing one's self to be deceived by a white flag which has behind it the traitorous plan of the black flag. Pacifism, the attitude of mind which clamors for peace at any price, produces a false peace which makes the world worse confounded, for it gives the enemy just what it wants and what error outlines. It enacts over again the story in the garden of Eden, according to which the culprit put the blame on some one else and attempted to go scot-free. The sincerest pacifist is a stumbling block to the liberty of mankind as well as to his own liberty.
Christian Science with its watchword of prayer confers the ability to mentally penetrate the veil of mesmerism caused by pacifism. Pacifism attempts to pacify without healing. Real pacification does not permit evils to cover themselves up, but uncovers in order to destroy. The true pacificator is one who brings peace through healing. Mrs. Eddy illustrates the true prayer for peace in Miscellany (p. 220): "Each day I pray for the pacification of all national difficulties, for the brotherhood of man, for the end of idolatry and infidelity, and for the growth and establishment of Christian religion —Christ's Christianity." The real peace of God, which is not human pacifism, leaves the clamor of the world behind, and is a state of consciousness wherein man walks and talks with God. Mental alertness governed by spiritual activity ascends into the realm of metaphysics and is clothed with the cloud of God's protecting power. The crash of the arms of war and the thunder of cannon cannot silence the still, small voice within, which is a loud voice to spiritual perception. Perfect peace is assured by holding steadfastly to the comforting promises of the great Master who lived for the love of God and thought in unity with Truth.
On page 10 of her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 Mrs. Eddy wrote: "Certain elements in human nature would undermine the civic, social, and religious rights and laws of nations and peoples, striking at liberty, human rights, and self-government —and this, too, in the name of God, justice, and humanity!" Social problems often cause conscientious citizens many a heartache as they take part in civic work. Righteousness sometimes calls for temporary material disorganization, for pulling down in order to build up. This has been proved in the lives of many Christian Scientists, when wrong thinking has had to be corrected in order that the right understanding of the Principle that governs and supplies might follow. God is always at hand to help in every problem if He is understood to be the only power that saves and heals. All questions can be properly put to the ever answering Father-Mother God who gives an ever answering solution to all problems. The miracle can always be expected, as it is the natural outcome of God's ever present love. Christian Scientists are Christian soldiers; they fill their places in civic life as true citizens working under the power of God to heal and save.
