JESUS' CONSCIOUSNESS OF SPIRITUAL REALITY

From the December 1918 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The great blessing that Christian Science gives to the world is its restoration of the spiritual consciousness of life and being to all mankind; the great evil of the serpent's temptation, as presented in the second chapter of Genesis, was its forcing the material sense of being and existence upon mortals. The reason for the great progress of Christian Science is that it ministers to the innate desire in humanity for spiritual things. A line of thought leading to this result runs through the whole Bible, finding its culmination in Jesus' life, teachings, and healing work, and then its final explanation and demonstration in Christian Science.

If the Bible is carefully read and spiritually interpreted it will be found that Abraham's call, as recorded in the twelfth chapter of Genesis, was in reality a call to the race to get out of a material sense of the world and worldly living, and to seek the divine, spiritual living, the consciousness which only God can impart,—that consciousness which "is cognizant only of the things of God," to quote Mrs. Eddy's words on page 276 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Abram was spiritually minded enough to obey, and he "went out, not knowing whither he went." Thus the unfoldment of the world's spiritual consciousness went on. The line of thought referred to above continued through many years and experiences until the time of Christ Jesus. He came to bring a fuller revelation to mortals, so "the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

Now, taking up Jesus' spiritual birth and endowment, we find that remarkable phenomena accompanied his entire progress. The divine announcement was received with full appreciation because of her spirituality. On page 29 of our textbook we read, "Jesus was the offspring of Mary's self-conscious communion with God." The coming of the wise men from the east was symbolic and prophetic. The star "in the east" was a token in the heavens to lead them to "where the young child was." The song of the angels was a burst of joy from the messengers of light who knew of the great Christ-mission. The Scripture says, "Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart."
