CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS

From the June 1918 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The student of Christian Science, especially one who has been privileged to serve the Church of Christ, Scientist, in the capacity of officer or committee worker, will grasp at sight the significance of the title of this article, and it is probable that he will recall numerous instances in which a lack of this Christian virtue was manifested. Indeed, unless he is much more spiritually minded than the average pilgrim who arrives at the crossroads where "the old man" must be put off and "the new man" take his rightful place, he will be able to remember all too easily regrettable examples of his own personal sense of importance and the consequent lack of consideration or carefulness, as Webster phrases it, "of the rights, claims, and feelings of others."

Not far, however, on the highroad leading straightaway from his valley of decision to a better sense of health and harmony, by means of signposts all along the way, the pilgrim discovers that the great cause which he has espoused is much less dependent upon his efforts, however zealous, than is he upon its beneficent influence and instruction. He is greatly impressed with the magnitude of his revered Leader's discovery, and the consequent insignificance of mere personality in connection with the onward march of humanity toward universal emancipation.

The vista thus vouchsafed him lifts him above the things to mortal sense important, into the range of the omnipotent and sublime; and he perceives that it matters little what one man or another wants or what he himself wishes, since, as David sang, "the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein."
