Energy is a favorite word with physicists. With it they conjure up any number of situations and endeavor to explain any number of things. To the Christian Scientist, however, such efforts to account for so-called causes and effects are, at times, almost amusing. One of the latest of these attempts at explaining came to the notice of the writer some days ago when there appeared in a scientific publication a sketch of an address recently delivered before a body of scientists, entitled, "The Origin and Evolution of Life." In this address the speaker, if correctly quoted, tried to show that life is composed of "living energies, operating as action, reaction, and interaction, and interpreted in terms of living energy." The ceaseless search for the origin of life is indicative of the unrest of mortal mind, and shows that in spite of its self-established claim to be creator, as well as the created, it is by no means satisfied with the result. From this we may well turn to Mrs. Eddy's words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 249, "Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy."
The prophet Isaiah gives a most wonderful account of the omnipotence of God, and throughout the Scriptures God is declared to be Spirit. This is unimpeachable testimony; and it follows as a logical sequence that Spirit and divine energy are synonymous. The only real energy, then, is the energy of Principle, of God, good.
In Christian Science we learn that energy is an attribute of Truth, the power that heals the despairing invalid, that brings hope to the heart, and color to the pallid countenance. It was Truth that called Lazarus from the dismal tomb and restored him to his sorrowing sisters; and it is Truth that is restoring thousands to health and giving, new courage to tens of thousands to-day. Jesus knew that God is the source of all power, all energy, for he said, "If ye continue in my word,...ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." He knew that a knowledge of this truth is that which men find only when their hearts become filled with pure and holy desire.
