With a deep sense of gratitude for Christian Science, I desire to give my testimony. Sunday morning, July 29, 1917, while making preparations for a business trip, I was suddenly taken ill with extreme nausea, followed by violent attacks of vomiting. These came with such increasing frequency and I was so overcome with a sense of weakness, that I was soon unable to sit up. I tried to recall some sentence from Science and Health that would be especially applicable to my case, but seemed unable to think clearly, and my sense of sight seemed so impaired that I could not read; indeed, I could hardly distinguish the furnishings in my room. It was a hot, sultry day, yet I was shivering under a heavy blanket and my body was covered with a cold perspiration.
I was alone in the house at the time and it was apparent that I must have help at once, but I knew the practitioners would be at church and could not be reached for an hour. One thing only I seemed able to declare,—that Truth expels all error; I repeated this over and over. By this time I had experienced two chills and the vomiting was almost continuous. Error tried to argue that I could not go to New York in three hours; that I could not work for a week in that hot city, following an attack of this kind; that I could never recover quickly enough to be able to do the hardest week's work in the whole year. In the face of all this evidence of the senses, however, I was most wonderfully upheld mentally, and never doubted that I would be healed, and able to take the train, although to mortal sense I was very ill, and under medical treatment probably would have been hurried to a hospital.
I was not able to get to the telephone, but when a young man, a Christian Scientist who roomed in the same house, returned from church I called him to my room and asked him to go to the home of a practitioner for me. I vomited but once after the treatment was given, my sight came back, my mind became clear, and I rested in God. In half an hour I arose from the bed, finished packing my bag, and made myself ready for a trip of over three hundred miles. When the carriage came for me, I was ready.
