UNITY AND COOPERATION

From the September 1918 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the remarkable changes resulting from the war has been the cooperation of men and women in carrying on the work of the country, and especially in the newly organized work for the national defense. As Christian Scientists we see, however, that this equality now becoming manifest is simply the result of the activity of Truth. It is the inevitable result of our understanding that man is spiritual, the expression of Mind, of the Father-Mother God.

Jesus, of course, understood this metaphysical truth nearly two thousand years ago. John, and possibly some of the other disciples, may have realized it to a certain extent; but Jesus' later followers, surrounded as they were by the traditions of the East, before long lost sight of this truth, and women were allowed to hold no office in the church. God was recognized as the Father only, and thus the subordinate position of women was inevitable, until Mrs. Eddy rediscovered and stated the fact that man is the expression of Mind, of the Father-Mother God. It is interesting to see how rapidly a change of view is now taking place, how the faithful work of Christian Scientists is helping not only those who come to them for help, not only the work of their respective churches, but the whole world as well. It has been openly stated in England by responsible officials that it is largely owing to the call which was made to women to help their country in its hour of need that it is being enabled to meet and overcome the attack made against human liberty.

As Christian Scientists we know that it is the recognition of the value of the spiritual qualities represented by the ideal woman which is bringing about such wonderful results. We see, too, that as women are taking their part and helping their country and humanity, this cooperation and unity is beginning to solve many industrial problems that, for generations, have defied the most earnest efforts of statesmen. The world is recognizing that woman's intuition, allied to the wisdom and reason of man, is bringing to light unity in directions heretofore undreamed of. Problems such as housing, unemployment, capital and labor, are all appearing in a new light; we no longer regard them as insoluble, and though, to begin with, it seemed as if the great part taken by women in the work of the country had emphasized more clearly many problems, we can now see that this was only a stage in their solution.
