I am deeply grateful for all that...

From the November 1919 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am deeply grateful for all that Christian Science has done for me. In 1910 I commenced to suffer from a severe stomach disorder and other internal troubles. For over two years I was treated by different doctors, but at the end of that time I was no better. The doctors then told me that the only thing to cure me was an operation. I had the operation and underwent different kinds of treatment, being in the hospital over two months, but I came home at the end of that time to the same old misery and pain.

One of the doctors who treated me gave me morphine to relieve the pain. It did relieve it for a time, only to return worse than ever, and the dose had to be constantly increased to produce any effect. Consequently the drug habit was formed. At the time I first heard of Christian Science I was taking sufficient morphine each day (according to materia medica) to kill thirty normal people. A friend who was interested in Christian Science took me into her home and asked a practitioner to treat me. I knew nothing whatever about this religion. When the practitioner came to see me she told me many beautiful things, but when she had gone I could only remember one thing she had said. I asked her if she thought I would get well and she answered, "There are no failures with God." A few days after treatment was begun I slept for a few hours, the first time for over two years except under the influence of the opiate. Within a month I slept normally and peacefully the whole night through. That was four years ago. I have never tasted a drug of any kind since. I had treatment for about three months, gradually getting stronger and better.

For over four years before hearing of Christian Science I always had my breakfast in bed, and rarely got up before noon. For three years I have risen every morning by five o'clock at the latest and do two or three hours' work before breakfast. I feel that I can never sufficiently express my gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me, and for all the loving-kindness that was shown to me by those who helped me in my time of need. The Bible says, "With lovingkindness have I drawn thee." I do thank God that His loving-kindness led me to Christian Science.
