It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I tell briefly of my coming into Christian Science. Jesus said, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Truly I am happy to state I have been born anew. Nine years ago Christian Science was first called to my attention by a neighbor, a total stranger, but being a Jew I scoffed at it. "What does a Jew want with Christian Science?" I asked. These never-to-be-forgotten words came back to me years later.
Four years ago my attention was again called to Christian Science by a friend of many years' standing, also of the Jewish persuasion, who saw my infirm condition. I had undergone a capital operation three years previous, which had left me an invalid. In addition the arches of my feet gave way, so that I could hardly walk; and my business made it necessary for me to be active all day. Our lengthy conversation terminated in my buying Science and Health, which I read for a year but seemingly could not understand, and so gave it up entirely. A year later I broke down completely and was unable to walk; but Love was guiding me, for only a few days later a lady whom I had not known before called to visit a member of the household. They discussed Christian Science and the benefit she had derived from it—in fact, she said she would have passed on if it had not been for the uplift received from the study of the Lesson-Sermons—and again I became interested. She mentioned having a vacant room to rent, so the following day I moved to her place, and with her assistance took up the study of Christian Science earnestly. This time I was ready for its message. I had to learn that human thought must be purged of the dross of materialism and be filled with spiritual understanding, which places God and His righteousness first in our daily lives. After several weeks' reading of Science and Health, with the Bible study, I was entirely healed and life opened its book to a new chapter for me. Numerous acquaintances meeting me were amazed at the change of my appearance in so short a time, many not knowing me as I had grown stout, whereas before I was quite thin.
I have also been healed of the use of stimulants. Hardly year passed but I suffered from rheumatism. Now four years have gone by and there has not been a sign of the ailment. I have likewise been freed from worry and fear and discordant conditions due thereto. Eight months ago I had occasion to call on two dentists for some work and discovered I had pyorrhea. This was overcome with one treatment by a practitioner. I have found Christian Science to be a process of spiritualizing thought, thus destroying all that defileth or maketh a lie. It is the light which in my travels I endeavor to let shine for others. I am a better Jew through following Moses' teaching of the moral law, but through understanding Jesus' teaching of the spiritual law I recognize the immortal truth.
