Christian Science reveals the grand fact that health is a divine activity, that it originates in divine Mind, and is governed by divine law. Mortals, ignorant of this fact and believing health to be a condition of matter, have sought out many inventions in the vain endeavor to restore by material means that which is essentially a mental condition. Health is one of God's gifts to His children; it is every man's inheritance. A correct understanding of this as taught in Christian Science will enable every one to demonstrate healing. The recognition of man's relation to divine Mind establishes the true sense of health. The following incident serves to illustrate the mental and spiritual nature of health and the metaphysical method of healing as operative in Christian Science.
When Christian Science was first presented to me I was healed almost immediately of various diseases that had long been considered incurable. There was one condition, however, that did not seem to yield. The fear that I would never be able to walk again, as had been so long supposed, seemed to cling tenaciously to me. I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" long hours each day, drinking in its wonderful truths with great joy. Weeks lengthened into months and still the ability to walk did not unfold, but the truth that was being gained was working a mighty transformation in thought. False notions about God and man, heaven and hell, were fading away and the radiant truth of being was dawning in awakened consciousness. The "little book" was my constant companion, until the fear of physical helplessness was lost in the beauty and power of its inspired pages. Then one bright summer morning the few steps necessary to board the car were taken in a mechanical, labored way to go for my usual treatment. On coming out after the treatment I do not recall thinking of walking or of the body in any way; thought was wholly absorbed with the peace in my heart and the beauty about me. When I became conscious of my surroundings I was about two blocks down the street, walking in freedom and stepping with perfect ease. Though that was many years ago the glory of that morning has not been forgotten. The air was never so balmy, the sunshine so beautiful, or the songs of birds so sweet. With great joy I passed through a small park and on to my home, a distance of eleven blocks, conscious of triumph and victory.
This divine method of healing shows ignorance of God to be the foundation of disease, and knowledge of God to be the true health. This healing is accomplished through the unchanging law of divine Mind, which is always in operation. This law is always available, always applicable, always adequate. Treatment in Christian Science is the utilization of this law in human experience. It is spiritual right thinking which, conforming to divine law, results in health and harmony and replaces the supposed thoughts of mortal mind based on materiality and resulting in fear, disease, and sin.
