I am grateful, indeed, for what Christian Science has done for me. I had been ill about three years and had undergone three operations, and when Christian Science came to me in December, 1916, it was twenty-one months since I had walked across my room. The heart was too weak for me to consider another and very serious operation thought necessary before I would be able to walk. There seemed nothing for me but to accept the theory that God sent such suffering for His own good purpose and therefore I must bear it patiently.
Christian Science had been brought to my notice several times, but it was only when everything else failed and my son was coming home on leave to find me still helpless and suffering, that I decided to ask for treatment. Within a week internal abscess and hemorrhage just, disappeared, and I sat up to dinner with my family. The healing that seemed most wonderfully spiritual occurred the night of a dreadful heart collapse. The truth was realized so clearly that in a very short time I was able to sit up and walk about without any discomfort. Shortly after that, though the streets were very unpleasant with slippery snow, I was able to go out for a little walk each day. We were on the east coast at the time and had very serious air raids, but I was able to help others to whom we gave shelter. I experienced no fear, and the heart was never abnormal or upset.
Mrs. Eddy's writings and the other Christian Science literature are a source of endless joy—the real, spiritual joy. I find one of the most helpful and beautiful lessons to be our Leader's interpretation of angels (Science and Health, p. 581), which is in part as follows: "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality." This has been such a wonderful help since a great trial came to me—the most awful human suffering a mother's heart can experience. My friend and practitioner came to me at once, radiating God's love, explaining the spiritual understanding of Life, and helping me to realize that "His arm encircles me, and mine, and all" (Poems, p. 4) and that there can be no real separation. Truly, God gave His angels charge over me, and to try and realize their constant presence helps in all the daily problems. Christian Science means everything to me now, and I feel so grateful to Mrs. Eddy for this wonderful revelation of God and His spiritual world. — London, England.
