ACKNOWLEDGING GOD

From the January 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the seven synonymous terms used by Mrs. Eddy to bring the apprehension of God nearer to the heart of humanity is that of Principle, and all must agree that no other name could so adequately define the unchangeable, invariable, and eternal nature of Deity. Thus the well-known verse from Proverbs. "In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths." may be rendered, "In all thy ways acknowledge Principle, and Principle shall direct thy paths."

When a beginner in the study of Christian Science tries to apply what he has learned of God to any given situation and finds the outcome harmonious, he will sometimes remark, "I cannot say if it was a demonstration or not: it might have been a chance or coincidence which would have happened anyway." But does the student of mathematics doubt that the correct solution of a problem is a demonstration of the laws and rules of numbers?

To acknowledge or recognize the basic rules or fundamentals of mathematics is to eliminate any element of chance, favor, or luck, so called, from the correct solution of any mathematical problem. To declare that the solution was a chance, simply implies ignorance of the basic rule which must have been applied, albeit unwittingly, for the result to be a correct one.
