I am glad to tell of the many blessings and proofs of God's loving and protecting care which I have received through Christian Science. Christian Science healed me of an incurable disease after all material means had failed. From childhood I had never been very strong. Later on the doctors diagnosed my case as double curvature of the spine. I doctored all the time and wore heavy braces, but experienced no relief whatsoever, in fact I seemed to grow worse and other complications set in. I suffered greatly from extreme weakness and astigmatism, making it necessary to wear glasses constantly and was told by several oculists that I would always have to wear them. I also suffered from severe headaches and for five years before hearing of Christian Science there was not an hour when I was free from pain in my back. Two of the physicians had said there was nothing more they could do for me. I was utterly discouraged and too weak to be up, and at the time was suffering from a severe cough, and the last physician had said I would always be troubled with it. It was at this time when everything looked darkest and I did not have a ray of hope to cling to that I was asked to give Christian Science a trial. I knew nothing whatever of Christian Science, but turned to it as a last resort, for "man's extremity is God's opportunity."
Because materia medica had failed even to relieve me, the physicians having said there was nothing more they could do for me, my mother took me to a Christian Science practitioner and from the beginning I was helped. I was instantaneously healed of the extreme weakness and cough with my first treatment. I was also instantaneously and permanently healed of the need for wearing glasses in my first talk on Christian Science. I had no specific work done for my eyes at this first visit. The power of Truth that healed me of the weakness and cough also healed me of the need for wearing glasses, after I had been obliged to wear them constantly for over seven years. The spinal trouble seemed to yield more slowly and now I am very grateful for this slow healing because it made me understand God and man's relationship to God better and to study more, but when I was ready and willing to give up all for God, for Christian Science, then through the loving, patient work of a practitioner I was permanently healed of the spinal trouble. These are only my first healings in Christian Science and if it did no more than heal me of this great suffering I could never be grateful enough, but it has done far more, for I have been healed of a tendency to severe colds, grippe, carbuncles, blood poisoning, inaction of the bowels, and many other physical disorders.
I would like to relate one other healing for which I am extremely grateful. I had a felon on one of my fingers and blood poisoning developed and for three days and nights I could not eat or sleep, the pain was so excruciating. I asked for Christian Science help, which was lovingly given. I learned many a lesson during this seeming trial. I learned to be more patient, and to know that God's work is done and is done perfectly and that God's work cannot be outlined. The finger had become purulent and black. I was awakened one night with a feeling that the top of my finger was coming off. Upon investigation I found that the whole top had come off from the first joint. I felt absolutely no pain whatever no more so than if a thimble had been removed from the finger, and in a short time I had a perfect finger top and nail and to-day no one could tell which finger it was that had the felon. This healing work was accomplished all through absent treatment. Our Leader says on page 179 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Science can heal the sick, who are absent from their healers, as well as those present, since space is no obstacle to Mind."
