Testimonies of Healing

While serving with the military...

From the October 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While serving with the military forces in German East Africa I contracted malarial fever, which was later diagnosed by the army physicians as cerebral malaria. I passed through three military hospitals and was eventually sent back to my home in South Africa. At that time I had read a little of Science and Health, but after my return home continued taking medicines, under doctors' orders. I had many attacks, which became severe and frequent, and I was reduced to such an extent that my end appeared to be near. It was then I was persuaded to give up all drugs and rely entirely on Christian Science treatment, and a practitioner was sent for. During the first few days I seemed to become worse under the treatment. The fear of giving up all drugs appeared to possess me and death seemed to be inevitable. The practitioner was again sent for and a few hours after his arrival I sat up in bed and have never since had an attack of fever. This was over two years ago. My final healing did not, however, come so quickly. It was several months before I actually left my bed, but when I did it was to leave behind me not only the malaria but the cigarette habit and all desire for alcohol. I had been an inhaler of about thirty cigarettes daily for twenty years and a moderate though persistent user of liquor for about the same period. I was indeed healed bodily and mentally and my feet were planted firmly in the way that I should go. I am grateful. I study Christian Science daily and rely on it for all my needs as well as for those of my family.—
