I have recently had an added proof of the power and goodness of God, for which I am most grateful and which may be of benefit to others at this time. I was attacked with influenza and for four days experienced intense physical suffering. My husband decided, after I failed to obtain relief through his work for me, to call a practitioner. Immediate help was received, but the disease seemed to hold on for several days. In seeking to uncover the reason for this I found quite a sense of self-pity handling me, —chagrin that I should have fallen under the belief of evil after having helped others overcome the same belief. The sense of self-condemnation was great, but as I saw that man in God's sight remains unchanged, saw that I, God's child, had never even had a disease, and that therefore there was nothing to be chagrined about, the pain left and I was able to rise from my bed immediately.
I am grateful that there were none of the aggravating results which usually follow a trouble of this kind. There was some weakness, the first two or three days after getting up, but from that time on I was able to do all of my usual work and some that was unusual. My family saw for the first time a Christian Science demonstration of healing. They had heard me tell of many healings in the twelve years I have been interested in Christian Science, but it had never been their privilege to witness a healing. On the day when I seemed to be experiencing the worst symptoms, two sisters and my mother came to see me. Material methods were suggested, which would, to their sense of things, immediately relieve me. Knowing, however, where my health came from, and knowing also the utter fruitlessness of material means, I said to them that I was satisfied to leave my healing with divine Love. My confidence evidently calmed their fears, for they were then willing to leave all to God. After having seen the severest part of the experience, they all united in saying that it was a wonderful demonstration.
I am deeply grateful for this experience because of the many lessons it taught me. I am grateful especially because of the compassion I learned from it. I have had many proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science, not only in healing sickness but in healing all forms of evil. Each year since I began the study of Christian Science has been a happier one, and I cannot be grateful enough for the privilege of church work, for the privilege of class instruction, and for the privilege of being a member of The Mother Church.—Indianapolis, Ind.
