UNIVERSAL LOVE

From the July 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 13 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals. It is the open fount which cries, 'Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.'" There is no place where it cannot reach us, no person who cannot be benefited by it, no need that cannot be met through it. Indeed, its very presence is all-sufficiency. It is the very Mind that does all thinking, the Principle that underlies all being; it is God, the All-in-all, the only is-ness there is. On page 140 of her textbook Mrs. Eddy writes, "The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death."

Now God being all and the only cause, what is there to bring into our experience the opposite of that which is? What is it that causes the child to make mistakes in solving his mathematical problems, but his ignorance of the fundamentals of mathematics, the laws or rules of its application? In this same way, we can trace all error back to its original source— ignorance of Principle, Love, and of its laws. Error, sin, and sickness do not exist, since Love universal fills all space and can conceive of its opposite as little as light can see darkness. Loving, divine Principle is the only cause, and as we get an understanding of this we can obey the commands of our Master to preach the gospel, heal the sick, and cast out demons.

As Jesus went through the streets of Jerusalem or walked on the lake shores of Galilee he did those works which were to prove the divine origin of his mission. Then, as now, the human elements of which the mortal mind is composed confronted the Christ and claimed the right of existence, but they could not then and cannot now resist the Love that is Truth. Jesus saw the error, the falsity, hypocrisy, and the pitiless reigning of mortal beliefs in the name of law and through the belief in the reality of the carnal mind, but he saw them for what they were—error, lies, claiming to be where, in truth, is their very opposite, the expression of Truth and Love. So benign and clear was his understanding of the reality of good and subsequent unreality of its opposite, error, that false belief had to vanish as darkness before light. It is this understanding of infinite Love that Christian Science teaches, which is the power that heals all our diseases and casts out demons. It does not, as some seem to think, teach that healing comes simply through overlooking error or, ostrichlike, putting the head in the sand and then believing evil is not. It is absolute Science and operates by law, and this law, applied and demonstrated, corrects the erroneous concept of things, and then the healing follows as surely as the day follows the night.
