Testimonies of Healing

Christian Science came to me...

From the November 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science came to me at a time when I was seriously questioning many of the doctrines of the church of which I had been a member from boyhood. What is usually called a "religious faith" had meant much to me, but in the course of time my thought had become impregnated with many doubts. The first service that a study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy rendered me was a possible answer to my misgivings. Since that time I have found that all which was worth while in my earlier religious training could be preserved to me, while that which was irreconcilable to a just God was eliminated. My gratitude to Christian Science is therefore first for this great blessing.

My inquiry into what our Leader has taught us concerning God has also been attended with many physical healings. I had been a student but a short time when the problem of an aching tooth confronted me and I was passing sleepless nights. The one from whom help was asked finally advised a visit to the dentist, but I felt that if an understanding of Truth could not heal an aching tooth, it could not heal anything. Relief came shortly after another visit to a practitioner. Some weeks later I had occasion to talk with a dentist, and related my experience. After examining my teeth carefully he said, "I do not know what you had, but it could not have been toothache, for there is not a tooth in your head that could have ached."

Another remarkable healing took place some years later. It seemed the part of wisdom to obtain life insurance, and the usual application was made. In the course of five weeks a physician examined me three times but did not give me any encouragement. When the incident was closed, I saw a copy of his report to the company. As I recall his summary it stated, "I have examined this man three times under the most favorable circumstances, and the facts are as herein stated." He also told the agent that I was hopeless as an insurance risk. During the period mentioned I had been to a Christian Science practitioner for help, and, notwithstanding the adverse report, the policy was granted on the recommendation of the company's board of physicians, who had not seen me, and who had no other information than that given them by the examiner. The policy was granted, however, the day following my last visit to a practitioner, at which time I told him no further treatment was necessary, for I was healed.
