When I first purchased the Christian Science...

From the October 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I first purchased the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, it was not in search for or in expectation of any physical healing, but simply to see what Christian Science was all about. I had not finished reading the first chapter, on prayer, before I realized that this was the truth about God and the universe, including man. The first noticeable effect of Christian Science in my daily life was in my disposition; the tendency to quick anger, sensitiveness, and impatience began to lessen.

Eventually the time came for me to make my decision, whether I should resort to medical practice for physical healing or seek the aid of a Christian Science practitioner. A Christian Science healing that I had witnessed many years before came to my thought. This healing I had not credited at the time to Christian Science, but had openly scoffed at the idea. In the time of my own need, however, I remembered this first witnessing of the power of God to heal, the "signs following" being a proof that "with God all things are possible." I made my decision for Christian Science; and the healing from the effects of poison ivy, in an aggravated form on the face, was accomplished in two hours. This has proved to me that, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 206 of Science and Health, "whatever blesses one blesses all." Later on I was healed in one treatment, by a Christian Science practitioner, of a physical difficulty that had baffled many physicians, my grandfather and uncle included (both being doctors). This ailment, from which I had suffered many years, having been destroyed by Truth, has never recurred.

I have had the proof that the right understanding of God, which Christian Science teaches, can heal wrong beliefs concerning our disposition, overcome physical difficulties, afford us protection, bring us greater joy and happiness; and it can and does destroy here and now the power of the "last enemy." For what Christian Science means to me and for the revelation of Truth to this age, as given to us by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, I can never express my gratitude in words.—
