HOREB

From the October 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"We should strive to reach the Horeb height where God is revealed; and the corner-stone of all spiritual building is purity." Mrs. Eddy has written this very succinct sentence on page 241 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures;" and it is an admonition worthy of the most careful consideration, if we would follow in her footsteps and progress as we should. If it had not been possible to reach the Horeb height, Mrs. Eddy would not have counseled us to strive to do so.

A careful study of the significance of Horeb as referred to in the Old Testament reveals among other things that it was on mount Horeb that Aaron and Moses met for council when the former was commissioned to assist Moses in his great work of leading the children of Israel forth from bondage. A little later, we find Moses receiving the Ten Commandments on mount Horeb; and still a little later. Moses seems to have gone to mount Horeb to have revealed to him the substance of that powerful speech which he made to the children of Israel at the end of the fortieth year of their wandering in the wilderness. At another time. Moses spent forty days and forty nights on mount Horeb; and when he descended he was able to instruct the Israelites in every detail of the tabernacle which they were to build, and which was the symbol that had such a powerful influence toward purity and freedom in all their after-experience.

These events indicate the significance of mount Horeb to Moses; and may they not indicate in a great measure what our mount Horeb should mean to us? To Moses it was very evidently the place "where God is revealed;" and is not such a place well worth striving for?
