I wish to express my gratitude at...

From the October 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I wish to express my gratitude at this time for the first healing that I experienced in Christian Science, which occurred about sixteen years ago. For many years I had been a great sufferer from stomach trouble, which seemed to grow worse rapidly. I had reached a point where hypodermics were of no use. After one of the paroxysms of pain had passed, a consultation of two physicians and a surgeon was held; and they pronounced my case one of gallstones, and advised an early operation. I consented to this, and the day and hour were set for the operation, a room in the hospital being engaged. Upon my return home my wife suggested Christian Science instead of the surgeon's knife. I had, previous to this, attempted to interest myself in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy; but I thought it to be about the most uninteresting work that I had ever seen. However, when my wife began reading to me from this book it seemed to be entirely new.

Two days later I went to a practitioner, and stated my case. She took up the work in Science for me. The following twenty-four hours seemed to be a time of intense mental suffering and confusion, so much so that I called upon the practitioner again, seeking relief. She very kindly informed me that the discordant conditions would vanish. That Wednesday evening I attended my first Christian Science service; and about two o'clock the following morning I suddenly knew that I was healed. The consciousness of God's presence and power seemed to be all around me, and I could have shouted for joy. I awoke my wife and told her of my experience; and, of course, we rejoiced in this wonderful healing. It is needless to say that the operation never took place; and I have been free from that trouble ever since. From that day to this our family has relied entirely upon Christian Science.

I am grateful for the many physical healings that have come to us during all these years; but I am most grateful for the understanding I have that God is a present help at all times and in all places, and that this understanding is made possible through the inspired life and works of our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.—
