It is with great joy and a deep sense of appreciation that I tell of the healing power of Christian Science in my own experience. Throughout girlhood I had much difficulty with my throat, and as I grew older this seemed to increase rather than lessen. Every cold settled there, and gave me a great deal of trouble. One winter it was much worse, and the physician whom I employed tried everything he could think of, including electricity, and at last resorted to cauterization; but with no satisfactory result. He consulted with another doctor, and both decided that it was diphtheria, and antitoxin was administered; but the report on the culture sent to the state authorities did not agree with their diagnosis. I was in bed at that time for over six weeks, and unable to attend to my business for several months. The following summer I was never wholly free from some disturbance in the throat; and the fall and winter brought what promised to be a repetition of the previous year.
It was then that I was asked by a sister, who had just begun the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to try Christian Science. A practitioner was called that evening, and the next morning I arose and found my throat perfectly clear. I ate a hearty breakfast, and immediately began reading Science and Health to see if I could learn how this wonderful healing had been accomplished. In my earnestness I forgot to notify the doctor not to come, and presently he walked into the room. He examined the throat, and remarked that it was as clear as a baby's, and that he did not realize himself that the powerful wash he had given me to use (which he had said would paralyze my throat and tongue for a time) would do the work so quickly! I told him that I had not used the wash; but did not tell him that I had had other treatment. He could see that the healing was complete. That took place nearly fifteen years ago; and in that one treatment I was also healed of chronic constipation and a tendency to canker.
For the past ten years, I have been in the active practice of Christian Science, and have proved many times its absolute power and healing efficacy. My deepest love and gratitude go out to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who, through her loving, patient, consecrated life and work, has made the way so plain for us.— Laconia, N. H.
