Recently I learned a lesson which has helped me, and which may be of service to some one else whose healing seems protracted. I was in an extremely nervous condition, and so constantly filled with fear that it seemed impossible to overcome it. One cold day I had occasion to go into a room which is rarely used and which is not heated. I left an oil heater burning there, but returned to the room several times before I found it warm enough. Later, the thought came to me that I might very well take an object lesson from the heater, whose business it was to radiate heat regardless of the cold in the room, or the length of time it took to vanish. It was my business to "stick to the truth of being in contradistinction to the error that life, substance, or intelligence can be in matter," as Mrs. Eddy tells us to do in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 418), regardless of time or physical testimony; also, I saw that in studying the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings I was being fed with the "oil of gladness" and so must give out joy and gratitude, because fretfulness and ingratitude could no more dissolve a discordant condition than the stove, if unlighted, could dissipate the cold.
I am deeply grateful for Christian Science, for class instruction, and for the healings I have had of sorrow, nervous breakdown, influenza, grippe, and ptomaine poisoning; also, for the change which is being brought about in my character; and I should like to express my appreciation for the faithful work of a loving practitioner.—
