In the month of April, 1915, two eminent doctors, after examining me under an anæsthetic, urged an immediate operation for the removal of two internal growths, one of which was of a fibroid nature. I had been through several operations, the last of which was performed by a well-known London specialist, who at the conclusion warned my husband against permitting another operation, saying my heart would not stand the strain again. Under these circumstances the outlook was extremely black, and it looked as though nothing could be done for me.
At this juncture Christian Science was presented to me by a friend, who assured me that I could be healed without an operation if I would accept its teaching. I immediately asked for the loan of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and after a few days' study of it asked for help from a practitioner, who most lovingly told me of Truth and its healing power. At the end of my third treatment I knew I was healed. Within a week I was enabled to take my skirt bands in two and a half inches. In addition, I was cured of chronic constipation, from which I had been a sufferer since childhood. Many physicians had been consulted on account of this condition, but no cure or permanent relief had been found. For some years I had been subject to gastric catarrh, some attacks being accompanied by serious hemorrhage. During these attacks I was confined to my bed for at least six weeks. On the last occasion, however, I knew the healing power of Truth, and within a week, with the loving help of a practitioner, all symptoms had disappeared. I have never had a return of this trouble.
Needless to say, I am brimming over with gratitude for all the blessings that renewed health has brought to me through my understanding of Christian Science; but still more am I grateful for the higher concept of my relationship to God gained through the new light thrown on the Bible when this is read in conjunction with our textbook. Also, I am grateful for being able to take part in various activities of the church and for the benefit of class instruction. Words fail to express my appreciation of the life and example of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose renunciation of self has proved such a help to mankind.—Cape Town, South Africa.
