If Mrs. Eddy through her simplicity,...

From the December 1923 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If Mrs. Eddy through her simplicity, purity, and compassionate love for mankind had given the world nothing else than the spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer, to be found on pages 16 and 17 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I should owe her an endless debt of gratitude.

When I first heard of Christian Science, I was an enthusiastic member of the woman's suffrage movement (nonmilitant), and it was through this movement I heard of Christian Science. Also I was as enthusiastic in the work of temperance, and a voluntary worker on behalf of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I was in a poor state of health; and now I know why. The world seemed to me a seething mass of injustice, misery, and cruelty. I was in that mental state which doubted if there were a God of love. I had just recovered from a severe illness; and after weeks of convalescence, one Sunday morning I went to the Christian Science church. I shall never forget that morning. The sun shone brilliantly; and the sense of peace and quiet inside that little church was a very wonderful experience to one who had thought that one's life must be spent on the warpath against seemingly colossal evils. The silent prayer—I cannot say what that meant to me! Then the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation! Never had I, nor have I since, ever listened to or read anything so wonderful and so beautiful.

"Give us this day our daily bread; Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections,"—these words kept ringing in my ears for days and days; and many times in the day I repeated them, not knowing what they really meant, not knowing that it was a prayer going out from a heart yearning to know more of God, good; but divine Love answered that prayer. I got the textbook, and while attending the services and reading Science and Health along with the Bible, I was healed of quick temper; and when this was healed, chronic indigestion, from which I had suffered for years, entirely vanished.
