On the hills of old Judea
Shepherds first beheld the light
Which foretold the Christ's appearing
On that wondrous Christmas night.
How their hearts did burn within them
When the angels sang the words,
Peace on earth; to all men blessing!
And they straightway left their herds.
Walking in the light that led them
Through the darkness of the night,
They did come to him long promised,
Christ, who is the Prince of light.
Not mid worldly pomp or glory
Did they find our King that night;
As a little child in meekness,
Truth did dawn on waiting sight.
So to all, throughout the ages,
Light of Truth still clearly shines.
We must follow where it leadeth,
Seeking not for earthly signs.
