My first healing through Christian Science occurred a few days after an operation for appendicitis, which had left me in despair and not caring whether I lived or died. An acquaintance, living in the same house, lent me for a few days a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At this time I was filled with great pity for myself, and read the book only at intervals. A day or two later, barely able to walk and swollen to almost twice my size, I managed to walk up two long flights of stairs and asked for the loan of the book again. After reading about ten minutes. I was instantaneously healed. I walked down the stairs to my own room free from pain and happier than I had ever been in my life. This was wonderful to me, and for two weeks I was spiritually uplifted. Then fear crept in and I found that I had to start from the bottom of the ladder and study, watch, work, and pray.
Christian Science has been a great help in caring for our three little girls. It is a great pleasure to me to hear them repeat the little poem by Mrs. Eddy (Poems, p. 69) beginning,—
"Father Mother God,
Loving me."
