SPIRITUAL ACTIVITY

From the December 1924 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE demonstrates Truth in human experience by the utilization of spiritual ideas. On page 463 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy characterizes a spiritual idea thus: "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive."

Through the spiritual idea of God and man, Abraham perceived that man can never be separated from God. The record of this spiritual illumination, as given in Genesis, is stated in terms of a covenant which God made with Abraham. Moses placed before the children of Israel a spiritual idea in the form of the commandment from on high, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." The prophets, after Moses, were guided and controlled in varying degrees by the spiritual idea. We have the Bible record of their activities, which clearly points out the line of this spiritual progress from the earliest days.

Jesus described the nature of the activity of the spiritual idea in human consciousness when he said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." What does it mean to seek "first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness"? How may we direct our mental activities so as to fulfill the First Commandment and demonstrate the power of its idea?
