In one of her poems (Poems, p.75), Mrs. Eddy expresses the thought that Love "will lift the shade of gloom" and bring the radiant light of Truth and Life to fill consciousness here and now. This promise was fulfilled in the first treatment given me by a Christian Science practitioner a number of years ago.
Physicians of different schools had tried, but failed, to relieve me of many physical disturbances, and could only promise further surgery. After having my first Christian Science treatment, I found myself healed of a physical difficulty (adhesions) which had resulted from a surgical operation, and I left the practitioner's office free from pain and inactivity. With this healing, I was verily to begin to experience the new birth, which our Leader points out goes on hourly for those who make the effort to have but one God, to love mankind, and to recognize the fact that because Spirit is the creator, there is but spiritual man and none other. I continued treatment for about five weeks, when I realized suddenly that the great mental depression and sense of sorrow had lifted; and the healing has been permanent.
One of the greatest proofs I have had of the supremacy of spiritual law was demonstrated in the complete healing of fallen arches. This penalty was supposed to follow long hours of standing and walking about during one of the Liberty Loan drives. After a week's suffering the healing of this occurred in half an hour. In dentistry I have also been relieved. When, at the request of a dentist, I had an X-ray photograph taken, it showed no trace of the trouble which was supposed to exist. A sharp attack of pneumonia was healed within a few hours.
