Testimonies of Healing

From the March 1924 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I too wish to avail myself of the privilege of bearing grateful testimony to physical and mental healing through Christian Science. Two years ago I suffered from a trouble which gradually developed into chronic bronchial catarrh. I grew weaker every day, and the condition grew worse in spite of medical treatment. After four months I told my doctor that I should have to give up my work and try a change of air. Consequently I went to a friend in Switzerland, where I consulted a well-known Swiss specialist; but he and all those who saw me gave me but a short time to live.

While I was staying at the home of my friend, the condition seemed to improve somewhat; and after three months, I spent one month at a health resort at a high altitude in the Badenese Black Forest, not cured, but with the hope of being cured. However, I grew worse. My hope disappeared, and I was confronted by the sad probability that I should never regain my health. Moreover, the time had arrived when I was to resume my work, as all the other employees had had to wait for their vacation until my return. This condition, my age (I am sixty-three years old), the thought of my dear ones, and the present serious state of our country,—all this cast me into a most dejected mood. The extremity had, so to speak, reached its zenith. But as often happens, in this very extremity I found the way to the right, the only, physician and helper. At my friend's I had become acquainted with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and had heard for the first time of Christian Science. I reached out for it as a drowning man reaches out for a saving rope. After a while I succeeded in getting Christian Science help from a practitioner in Berlin; and then a wonderful thing followed. Despite a distance of some five hundred and fifty miles I noticed (on the second or third day) a change within me which I was at a loss to understand. I was filled with gladness and a joyful confidence which changed my very nature. After five days I was freed from my trouble. I immediately resumed my work, and have, since then, attended to my duties with bodily and mental freshness.

For fully twenty years my left leg was uninterruptedly swollen about one third beyond its normal size. I was at times greatly inconvenienced by this trouble, being hardly able to attend to my work. At the time I was healed of lung trouble, this abnormal condition also disappeared; and I have been free from it ever since.
