Testimonies of Healing

Out of gratitude for what Christian Science...

From the January 1925 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Out of gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me I desire to give this testimony. During my early life I had been taught to shun Christian Science, and regard it as one of the evils of the age; consequently, as I grew up I looked upon Christian Scientists with intolerance.

Then came a time when my health failed. I turned to physicians and followed their instructions ardently; but matters grew from bad to worse, until they finally told me they had done all it was possible for them to do. I was in a most wretched state, and through a sense of false pride was very much ashamed of my condition, always having looked upon ill health as being illegitimate for young people, and rather to be participated in by adults of advanced years and invalids; so I suffered on in silence, endeavoring to keep up with the race. At last, in mental agony I began to pray to God, petitioning Him for help and questioning as to why I should be in such a plight. Even that was of no avail.

The crisis came;and with tearful eyes, a broken and contrite heart, I went to my closet, shut the door on material sense, determined to solve the problem then and there. I fervently prayed that if God was Love, compassionate and good as the Bible taught, and if the Bible was true, then God would open His ears to my supplication and show me how to go. At this I began to feel uplifted; and something told me to open the Bible. I did so, and my eyes fell upon the words in the twentieth chapter of John's gospel, where Jesus said to the weeping Mary, "Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou?" and I knew then that the healing presence was with me; but I was ignorant of the next step, and prayed to be shown where to go from there. Then the "still small voice" whispered the words "Christian Science." I was still puzzled, not knowing how to proceed to get help that way, not even knowing there was such a thing as a Christian Science practitioner. In the meantime my mother had taken a roomer into our home to be with us a short while, and after a few days I was sent to her room on an errand. We fell into conversation, and she revealed to me that she had been wonderfully healed through Christian Science. Immediately I began to question her, and she gave me the name of the practitioner she had employed, who was in a distant city. That same day I wrote to this practitioner;and from thenceforth my life began to change into a healthy, happy state of existence.
