WHATEVER we are conscious of constitutes our present sense of existence. Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly," implying not that life is that which physicists may call "the vital spark" within a material body, but that it is a spiritual possession which one may lay hold of in abundance.
How can the coming of the Christ give one a greater abundance of life? In order for each individual to answer the question satisfactorily for himself and accept the great gift so freely offered, it is necessary that he should know and follow the teachings of the Master. Jesus said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Evidently, this greater abundance of life was to follow the true understanding of God and the things pertaining to God and His Christ.
Through the study of Christian Science we learn that all that is comprised in the knowledge of God is that which is like Him,—spiritual, harmonious, true, and eternal,—and that nothing is part of this consciousness which partakes of the nature of materiality, sensuousness, or evil. In proportion as one enriches and enlarges his consciousness of good, in that proportion is he acquiring a fuller knowledge of God, who is all good, and therefore a greater abundance of life itself.
