Twenty-four years ago, after physicians had told us that my mother had the most dangerous form of femoral hernia, that she could never take a step without wearing a truss,and that even with one her life would be in constant danger, we turned to Christian Science for help. We knew nothing whatsoever about it, although we had seen the effects of Christian Science treatment on a neighbor who had been brought home from the West, in the last stage of consumption, to die. We saw this neighbor change from the appearance of death to the appearance of health, and day by day grow stronger,and regain normal size, expression, and color. Within two weeks after beginning treatments in Christian Science my mother removed the truss, and has walked normally ever since. At the same time I was healed of constipation.
Our family, which consisted of father,mother,and four daughters, had been one in which there had always been much sickness. Although I was the only one of the daughters who began immediately to study Christian Science, in the course of the following years all have often turned to it for healing. During the past twenty-four years, Christian Science has been my only physician, and it has met my every need. Some years ago I was healed very quickly of pneumonia. Two days after I had been lying more or less unconscious, when every breath I took caused extreme pain, I walked eleven blocks to church and back, on an icy December day, without any ill effects.
During my senior year at college, a stubborn case of malnutrition seemed to get the better of me. I could not digest my food; and I grew so thin I was nothing but skin and bones. Every function of the body seemed to be out of order, and I learned after-wards that the college physician and many others in the college thought I would not live to graduate. The healing was very slow. It was more than three years before I was back to what is considered a normal condition, although I had not been required to spend a day in bed, I suffered no pain to speak of, and I even traveled five months in Europe. During these three years I discovered a great many errors of thought that needed to be corrected, and I made some progress in the understanding of true obedience to the demands of God.
