Eighteen years ago I was crippled with rheumatism, walking in agony with the aid of two sticks, and unable to hold my own baby. I was also threatened with creeping paralysis. Life as I knew it held no joy for me, and I longed to get out of it all. It was then I first heard of Christian Science, and was quickly healed of these difficulties through talks with a friend and the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This was the means of bringing many others into Science, and much healing followed in the place where I live. Since then all sorts and conditions of human belief have been healed in the home, including ptomaine poisoning, whooping cough, measles, sprained ankle, mumps, and fevers.
The following is one of many instances of God's protection. On my way to India to join my husband, when the troopship I was in arrived at an eastern port my daughter and I and another Scientist went on shore; a few other passengers landed also. The sea was not particularly rough then, but when it was time to return we had difficulty in getting the natives to take us back to the ship, as the wind had risen and we had only a small rowboat. At last they agreed to take us, but when we were a little way out, the sea became so rough, and the wind so strong, that they wished to return. However, we continued on our way. Every moment it seemed as though the boat would upset; and little progress was made, though our oarsmen were big and strong. We were shipping a great deal of water and were drenched to the skin. When we got near the ship, we were many times nearly dashed to pieces, and could not get anywhere near the gangway. Eventually the shouts of the natives were heard, and a line was thrown out to us, which was followed later by a rope ladder that enabled us to get on board. All this time we had no fear, for we knew that Love was with us, and was taking care of us; that there was no destruction, and no death—that all was Life.
The reading of the Christian Science periodicals founded by Mrs. Eddy, including our daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, is a ceaseless joy to me, bringing spiritual refreshment. Christian Science is an ever present, practical help, and I thank God for it. My love for and gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for giving us this beautiful truth are unbounded, for she has helped me to realize those beautiful words of hers (Science and Health, p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."— Malvern, Worcestershire, England.
